The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team
beat Otero Junior College (24-4 overall, 9-3 south sub-region) 60-58 on Feb. 21 in Cheyenne. This was the second meeting of these teams this season, and the second victory for the Golden Eagles. LCCC has not lost to the Rattlers since February 27, 2009. Watch the score that tied the game.
The Golden Eagles had much to prove to the nationally ranked Rattlers and shot 46 percent compared with OJC’s 30 percent in the first half. The Golden Eagles took a 29-23 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Eagles kept constant defensive pressure on the Rattlers and made it hard to get points in the paint. The Eagles blocked nine shots in the game. The Rattlers started to shoot more from the three-point line, and only made 5 of 19.
With only a few seconds left to play and the game tied 58-58, the ball was inbounded to LCCC’s Philip Freeman, who drove to the basket, drew two defenders and made a quick pass to his cutting teammate Rodrigo Silva for the basket and two-point advantage with 3.4 seconds remaining. The Rattlers got a break when Golden Eagle Charles Cooks fouled Perrytone Smith on the next possession. Smith had a chance to make two free-throws to tie the game, but missed both shots. The Rattlers still had one more opportunity after the rebound from the second missed free-throw went out of bounds off of an LCCC player with 1.9 seconds left. The Rattlers inbounded the ball to Brandon Harris who attempted a last second three to win, but was rejected by Silva.
