Double-double performances by sophomore Deon Edwin and freshman Spencer Svejcar helped the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles pick up their 13th win of the season by defeating the Trojans of Trinidad State Junior College 93-84 in Trinidad, Colo.
Edwin finished the game with 25 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block; while Svejcar had a season-high 19 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Between the two of them they recorded more than half of the team’s rebounds and three-pointers. Sophomore Deshon Portley finished with 21 points on the evening.
The Golden Eagles got to off to a nice lead early in the first half, but the Trojans made a push late in the half to regain the lead going into the half. Joe Smith led the Trojans in scoring with 22 points, knocking down all three of the Trojans’ three-pointers.
The Golden Eagles stepped up the defensive pressure in the second half as they forced the Trojans into 15 turnovers on the evening. The Golden Eagles did a fantastic job of creating lanes to drive to the basket and got to the free-throw line 38 times, knocking down 26 of those.
As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 46.9 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from the three-point line and 68.4 percent from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles held the Trojans to just 3 of 18 from the three-point line for 16.7 percent.
With the victory, the Golden Eagles improve to 13-6 and 4-2 in the south sub region. Up next, the Golden Eagles will host No. 3 in the country North Platte Community College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 at the LCCC gymnasium.
