Vivar-Diaz' late goal wins it for Golden Eagles
The Golden Eagles were in Sterling, Colo., on Oct. 12, where they defeated the Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen off a late goal in double overtime to get the 2-1 victory.
The scoring began when LCCC’s Jesse Molina was fouled down in the box in the 30th minute and freshman Chang Yang stepped up and converted on the penalty kick. The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead into the half.
The second half both teams played more physically and the Plainsmen ties it up at 1-1 in the 71st minute when a ball at the top of the box bounced back to NJC’s Kyle Hynes, who knocked it in past three LCCC defenders and the goalkeeper.
The game still was tied at the end of regulation, forcing overtime. Still 1-1 after the first overtime, the second overtime had more opportunities for the Golden Eagles. As time was winding down, Brandon Flores was able to play Dennis Vivar-Diaz into space, and his shot found the back of the net with only four seconds remaining. The game ended on a golden goal, and the Golden Eagles escaped with the 2-1 victory.
With the win, LCCC improves to 11-5-1 and 10-2 in Region IX. Up next, the Golden Eagles hit the road for their final two regular season matches against Sheridan and Northwest College on Oct. 18 and Oct. 19.
