Friday, February 14, 2014
LCCC improves to 16-10 with the 90-80 win over Trinidad State Junior College.
The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team scored 48 first-half points and continued to roll in the second half for the season sweep of Trinidad State Junior College with a 90-80 victory on Tuesday evening at LCCC gymnasium.
This was the second meeting between the teams as the Golden Eagles went to Trinidad on Jan. 11 and came back with a 93-84 victory.

The Golden Eagles had three scoring in double figures as they record their 16th victory of the year. Sophomore Deon Edwin led all scorers with 30 points, while fellow sophomore Deshon Portley had 26 points.

A strong start sparked the Golden Eagles as they jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first six minutes. The Trojans were able to cut that lead to three but couldn’t get any closer than that. The Golden Eagles forced the Trojans into 18 turnovers that led to easy points in transition in the first half. The Golden Eagles only committed 13 turnovers the entire ball game and ended up having 14 more shot opportunities than the Trojans.

The Golden Eagles continued to apply the pressure coming out of the half by forcing three turnovers that led to an 11-0 run to open up the half. The Golden Eagles extended the lead to as large as 17 points. Trojan Joe Smith had 23 points and knocked down a couple of three-pointers to try to get the Trojans back in it.

Golden Eagles freshman Kamari Robinson came off the bench and contributed with the game’s only double-double as he had 13 points and 10 rebounds. As a unit the Golden Eagles shot 35.3 percent from field and 71.7 percent from the free throw line. Golden Eagles also went 9-21 from the three-point line for 42.9 percent, which is 9 percent above their average on the year.

With the victory, the Golden Eagles improve to 16-10 on the year and 7-6 in the south sub-region. Up next, the Golden Eagles host their final home game of the season against Otero Junior College. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on the LCCC network Channel 11.
