Men's soccer team finishes 2nd in region

Golden Eagles end season 15-6-1/

The Laramie County Community College men’s soccer team was in La Junta, Colo., over the weekend for the Region IX Tournament. The Golden Eagles entered the tournament as the No.1 seed but fell short in the championship game, losing to Otero Junior College 2-1.

The Golden Eagles opened up the tournament against No.8 seed Western Nebraska Community College Cougars on Oct. 25. The Golden Eagles took care of business and put the Cougars away 9-0 in the opening round.

Sophomore Fernando Perez got things started in the 12th minute when he collected a poor clearance outside the 18-yard box and put his shot away. Freshman Dennis Vivar-Diaz made it 2-0 in the 20th minute on a pass from freshman Chance Wiedrich. Wiedrich got the third in the 33rd minute as headed in a free kick from sophomore Tyler Mangel. Vivar-Diaz scored his second goal of the game in the 41st minute, and freshman Willy Salamanca had the assist. The Golden Eagles drove in one more right before half to make it 5-0 as sophomore Wyatt Witty sent a cross in and freshman Brandon Flores headed it in.

The Golden Eagles opened up the second half right where they left off when freshman Luis Morillion found sophomore Jesse Molina in the 48th minute to make it 6-0. Molina then found freshman Domey Espinoza in the 53rd minute for the seventh goal of the game. Flores recorded his second of the game in the 64th minute on a pass from sophomore Dimitri Sofias. Sophomore Taylor Ruff finished things up for the Golden Eagles in the 85th minute to give them a 9-0 victory.

Golden Eagles shut out Cardinals
The Golden Eagles faced off with the North Idaho College Cardinals in the semifinals of the Region IX Tournament in La Junta, Colo., on Oct. 26. The Golden got a hard-earned 2-0 victory over the Cardinals.

The Golden Eagles got on the board in the 29th minute when freshman Domey Espinoza found fellow freshman Dennis Vivar-Diaz, who was able to beat a defender and put his shot up and over the keeper to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. LCCC took that lead into halftime.

The Golden Eagles were in control of the second half as they outshot the Cardinals 10 to 3 in the second half and got their second goal in the 56th minute when sophomore Wyatt Witty sent in a corner kick and found fellow sophomore Jesse Molina, who headed in the cross to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles held the Cardinals scoreless and advanced to the Region IX Finals.

Golden Eagles fall in championship
The Golden Eagles played in the Region IX Championship on Oct. 27 in La Junta, Colo., against Otero Junior College. The Golden Eagles were the No. 1 seed coming in, and the Rattlers of Otero were the No. 2 seed.

Otero applied pressure early on and was able to find the net first in the 7th minute when Ramiro Ceja capitalized on a missed clearance to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead. Ceja was at it again in the 18th minute when he struck a shot from about 25 yards out on a rope into the top left corner to put the Rattlers up 2-0.

LCCC answered back a minute later when Jesse Molina found Domey Espinoza at the top of the box and put his shot away to the cut the lead in half in the 19th minute. The score going into half was 2-1.

The Golden Eagles found a nice rhythm in the second half, creating some great looks, but were just not able to break through and tie things up. With a scoreless second half, the Eagles lost the match 2-1. They finished the year 15-6-1.
