The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team was victorious this past Saturday with an 89-78 victory over Otero Junior College in the final home of the year.
Emotions were high as the Golden Eagles recognized five sophomores who were playing their last home games in Golden Eagles uniforms. Two of those five sophomores were Deon Edwin and Deshon Portley, who were the game’s leading scorers for the Golden Eagles. Edwin finished with 27 points, while Portley had 22.
The Golden Eagles set the tempo early in the first half, creating turnovers off of great defensive pressure. Those turnovers led to transition baskets on the other end for the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles had a lead as large as 15 in the first half as they shot 53.3 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the three-point line in the half. The Golden Eagles held the Rattlers to just 23.8 percent from the three-point line and took a 50-38 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles continued to get good looks at the basket, especially down low on the block. As a team, the Golden Eagles shot better than 50 percent from the field and more than 70 percent from the free-throw line for an 89-78 victory. Sophomore Kendyl Grover also had a great ballgame with 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 17-10 on the year and 8-6 in the south sub region. Up next is a road trip to North Platte Community College on Feb. 19. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
