Men’s soccer season ends in region semifinals

The Golden Eagles lost 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout with Western Wyoming Community College.

The Golden Eagles men's soccer team lost 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout with Western Wyoming Community College in the Region IX semifinals on Oct. 27 at LCCC.

The 11th-ranked Golden Eagles took control of the game right from the whistle. LCCC controlled the time of possession, but it didn’t take long for the Mustangs to find a small gap in the Golden Eagles' defense for the first goal of the game in the 19th minute. The Mustangs took the 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Eagles pushed more players forward and pressured the Mustangs’ defense. The Golden Eagles outshot the Mustangs 36 to 13 but couldn’t get a shot past the WWCC goalie. In the 86th minute, LCCC’s Vitor Nazareth dribbled past the Mustangs' defense and was fouled in the penalty box. LCCC was awarded a penalty kick. and Peterson Neri buried the shot past the Mustangs keeper to tie the game 1-1. The game remained tied after two overtime periods and went to penalty kicks to decide the winner. LCCC made two out of four attempts and WWCC made all four attempts to get the win. WWCC went on to beat Northwest College and take the Region IX final

The Golden Eagles finished the season with a 13-4-1 record. They were undefeated in conference play on the road and at home. They also reached their highest ever national ranking of No. 11 in the nation.
