Women’s soccer struggles in opening matches

Losses go to Butler, CSU Club Gold.

The 11th-ranked Laramie County Community College women’s soccer team kicked off the regular season on Sept. 3 hosting Butler Community College. The Golden Eagles played a hard-fought game but lost 3-2.

Butler’s Cindy Benitez scored the only goal of the first half and led 1-0 at halftime.

LCCC’s Amanda Halter tied the game up in the second half scoring in the 46th minute, assisted by Emi Yamamoto. The Golden Eagles scored again in the 67th minute and took the lead off a goal from Shino Kunisiwa. In the 74th minute Benitez would score again for the Grizzlies to tie the score. In overtime, Butler’s Benitez was able to get her third goal and the win in the 95th minute.

The Golden Eagles played Colorado State University Club Gold team on Sept. 5 in Fort Collins, Colo. CSU scored the lone goal of the game in the 23rd minute. LCCC took its second loss of the season, 1-0.

The women’s soccer team (0-2 overall, 0-0 Region IX) will host Region IX opponent Western Nebraska Community College on Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. All Golden Eagle athletic events are free.
