Men's basketball team starts south subregion with victory

The Golden Eagles are 5-2.

The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team was looking to start the south subregion 1-0 and did so by taking down Lamar Community College 93-84 in Lamar, Colo., on Nov. 23. The Golden Eagles (5-1) extended their winning streak to four and were led by a strong performance from sophomore Deon Edwin, who had 28 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and one assist.

In the first half, the Golden Eagles didn’t allow Lamar to hit a 3-pointer and led 47-29 at the half. LCCC held the Runnin’ Lopes to 45 percent shooting from the field.

The Runnin’ Lopes were able to narrow the gap some in the second half, but the Golden Eagles hung on for a 93-84 victory. Although the Runnin’ Lopes out rebounded the Golden Eagles 45 to 36, the Golden Eagles got more second chance opportunities and had only eight turnovers in the game compared to the Lamar’s 24. Sophomore Deshon Portley was in double figures with 23 points, six rebounds, four assists, four steals and three turnovers.
With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 5-1 on the year and 1-0 in the South Sub-Region. Up next the Golden Eagles travel to Sterling, Colo., to take on 9-0 Northeastern Junior College.

Golden Eagles drop to 1-1 in south subregion
The Golden Eagles hit the road Nov. 27 to take on Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen in Sterling, Colo. LCCC came into the contest on a four-game winning streak and was looking to give Northeastern its first loss of the year.
The Plainsmen jumped out 7-2 in the first few minutes and held on to that lead thanks to an aggressive attack on the glass for 23 offensive rebounds. The Golden Eagles then were able to settle down and narrow the gap but remained behind 41-32 at the half.

The Golden Eagles made some adjustments in the second half and went on a run, taking a one-point lead midway through the second half. The game remained close down the stretch, but in the end the Plainsmen secured the 86-80 victory.
Duol Mayot led the way for the Plainsmen with 20 points and 14 rebounds. For the Golden Eagles, All-American Deshon Portley tallied 34 points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist.
 
The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 5-2 on the year and 1-1 in the south subregion. Up next the Golden Eagles are off to Sheridan, Wyo., for the Lions Club Thanksgiving Classic.
