The Laramie County Community College men’s soccer team
opened the season at home, tying 0-0 with NJCAA No. 14 Barton County Community College (Great Bend, Kan.) on Aug. 24. Both teams were slow to get rolling as each was trying to settle into the game, but as the game progressed, so did the tempo. The Golden Eagles were knocking on the door late in the game but just could not get on the board.
The Eagles had their opportunities as they outshot the Cougars of Barton County 17-7, with shots on goal being 8-2. The Eagles’ most dangerous opportunity was when Jesse Molina had his free shot bang off the crossbar from about 30 yards out.
“This was a game that we should have come out of with a victory, and we needed to put our chances away in front of the goal,” said head coach Vince Gibson.

The Golden Eagles’ second match of the weekend against No. 6 Iowa Western Community College (Council Bluffs, Iowa) on Aug. 25 ended with a 2-1 loss. It was a different test for the Golden Eagles, as Iowa Western played a different style than Barton County. Iowa Western was able to get on the board first as Jordan Palmer headed in a ball sent in by Rafael Ferreira on a free kick from about 40 yards out in the ninth minute of the game. LCCC’s Willy Salamanca quickly answered and was able to capitalize on a ball slotted to him by Domey Espinoza in the 13th minute of the game to knot things up at 1-1.
With about 14 minutes remaining until half, Salamanca was dragged down by the goalkeeper and earned a penalty kick for the Golden Eagles. Dennis Vivar-Diaz stepped up to try to put the Golden Eagles up, but Iowa Western keeper Will Lukowski stopped the shot. Tides began to turn in the second half as Iowa Western began to pressure in the attacking half and created some dangerous opportunities. Finally, in the 84th minute, Osman Elis put Iowa Western ahead with what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a pass from Alan Rivera as he slotted the ball to the right side of the net.
It was a difficult one for the Golden Eagles to take, but they will have to quickly put that behind them as they hit the road for another tough task as they take on No. 7 Illinois Central College on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Jefferson College Monday, Sept. 1, in Urbana, Ill.
LCCC finished opening weekend with a record of 0-1-1.
