Golden Eagles hand Hutchinson first loss of season for the district title.

The No. 10 nationally ranked Laramie County Community College women’s soccer team (18-3-1) is headed to the NJCAA Tournament after defeating No. 3 nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College (21-1), 1-0 on Nov. 6 in Cheyenne.

The Golden Eagles handed the Blue Dragons their first loss of the season in the District B championship game. In the first half both teams struggled to take control of the game and no goals were scored.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles came out strong and charged the Blue Dragons’ goal. With all the pressure coming at them, the HCC defense had to kick the ball out for an LCCC corner kick in the 52nd minute. The Golden Eagles took the corner kick, which was redirected by LCCC’s Melissa Ledesma to Emi Yamamoto, who buried what turned out to be the game-winning shot into the back of the net.

Both teams had other chances to score but weren’t able to convert. Toward the end of the game, the Blue Dragons pushed for one last chance to tie the game. LCCC goalie Lauren Pelkey came out to make a stop, but the ball was misdirected by an LCCC defender and Pelkey made a change-of-direction, diving save to preserve the shutout.

The Golden Eagles advance to the NJCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament on Nov. 18-20 in Topeka, Kan.
