LCCC adopts new high school equivalency certificate tests

Monday, December 02, 2013
The HiSET test will replace the GED beginning in 2014.

In response to opportunities nationwide to offer alternative high school equivalency certificate assessments, Laramie County Community College’s Adult Basic Education Centers in Cheyenne and Laramie will now offer the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) by Educational Testing Service for those seeking their high school equivalency certificate in southeast Wyoming.

The HiSET test will be available in both paper- and computer-based formats beginning in 2014.

In October, three different high school equivalency assessments were approved for use in Wyoming by the Wyoming Community College Commission. These assessments were HiSET, GED 2014 and the Test Assessing Secondary Completion. However, HiSET was recommended by all adult basic education directors in Wyoming for several reasons including its ability to be completed either on paper or on the computer and the fact that ETS is a non-profit organization preferred by some scholarship benefactors.

The cost of the assessment should remain close to the $90 that is currently charged for the GED exam. LCCC is also exploring the possibility of continuing GED assessments through their testing center.
