The Golden Eagles were up for the challenge when they hosted the top-ranked team in the nation on Sept. 25 and defeated Barton Community College 3-2.
LCCC opened the scoring in the first minute of play. Peterson Neri stole the ball away from a Cougar defender and shot the ball wide of the goalie and into the net. The Cougars answered back on a penalty kick. In the 43rd minute, a Barton forward charged the LCCC goal and drew out the goalie and deflected a shot off an LCCC defender and took a one-goal lead. In the final minute of the first half, Golden Eagle Spencer Gray crossed a ball into the Barton goal box, and Alfonso Perea received the pass and tied the game up at halftime.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles finished what they started. In the 53rd minute, LCCC’s Dino Soto volleyed a shot from 35 yards out for the game-winning goal.
New polls will be out later in the day on Sept. 27. Look for LCCC to make an appearance.

LCCC comes from behind to beat Northwest College men’s soccer team
The Golden Eagles came out flat against Northwest College on Sept. 23, but finished strong and won the game in overtime 2-1.
In the 80th minute of the second half, the Trappers scored the first goal of the match. This created some urgency in the Golden Eagles and they quickly responded with a sliding goal from Joreg Arenas in the 83rd minute, off a well-placed assist from Alfonso Perea.
In overtime, the Golden Eagles took over and had a constant attack on the Trappers goal. In the 108th minute of play, LCCC’s Dino Soto dribbled through the Trapper defense and passed it to Perea who was wide open and scored the game-winning goal.

The men’s soccer team (7-1-1 overall, 3-1 Region IX) will travel to Scottsbluff, Neb., on Sept. 28 to play Western Nebraska Community College at 1:30 p.m.
