Men's basketball team gains 7th win of the year

Thursday, December 05, 2013
LCCC sends Western Nebraska home with a loss.

The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team was looking to get above .500 in the south subregion on Dec. 3 and accomplished that task with a 96-86 victory over Western Nebraska Community College. The Golden Eagles (7-3) hosted their first south subregion game of the year against the rival Cougars (6-6).

The Golden Eagles got off to the start they were looking for, jumping out on a 13-2 run to start the game. LCCC put great pressure on the defensive end, creating turnovers that led to baskets in transition. The Cougars narrowed the gap and went on their own 12-2 run to get back into the game. The first half remained very tight, but the Golden Eagles went into the half up 41-35.

The second half remained exciting as both teams kept attacking the rim. The Cougars made good use of their 7-foot freshman Brandon Morley down low on the block. Morley finished with a game high 31 points. Five minutes into the second half, the Cougars took their first lead of the game at 56-54. LCCC began to attack the basket more and got to the free throw line 19 times in the second half, knocking down 17. The Golden Eagles held on for the victory.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was sophomore Deon Edwin, who had 27 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and sophomore Kendyl Grover recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles improved to 7-3 on the year and 2-1 in the south subregion. Up next, the Golden Eagles host Eastern Wyoming College at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in the LCCC Gym.
