power forward Rodrigo Silva has signed a national letter of intent with Texas Tech University for the 2012-13 season. The 6-foot-10, 225-pound native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, plans to enroll at the Lubbock, Texas, school after graduating from LCCC this spring.
Texas Tech has been looking at Silva for several months. Other schools showing interest included the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Wichita State University, Washington State University, the University of Hawaii and the University of Utah.
Silva visited the Texas Tech campus last month and decided it was the right fit for him.
“I believe I can play for this team and help this team be better,” he says. “It’s the best school for me.”
Last season, Silva averaged 13.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks per game. His blocks per game average ranked second in the NJCAA. He was named to the All-Region IX Team last year, and was honored as the NJCAA Division I Player of the Week on Feb. 8.
Since LCCC basketball coach Jason Ficca and assistant coach DeWayne Saulsberry took over the program in 2007, three players, including Silva, have gone on to continue their basketball careers at NCAA Division I schools. Colby Batiste transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette in 2008, and Romaric Lasme went to Morehead State in Kentucky in 2010.
