The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team lost two close games over the weekend.

LCCC falls to Casper College in overtime

The Golden Eagles had a tough time defending Casper’s Brandon Walton who had 39 points, as the Thunderbirds took the victory over the Golden Eagles 84-82 on Saturday at LCCC.

The Thunderbirds and Golden Eagles battled back and forth in the early part of the first half. LCCC found itself in a 12-point deficit, but was able to battle back to within six points at halftime, 41-35.

In the second half, the Thunderbirds came out shooting and put the Golden Eagles back in a 12-point hole. LCCC kept chipping at the Thunderbirds until the last minutes of the game, when LCCC’s Bryce Velasquez tied the score at 74 and sent the game into overtime. During the overtime period, it remained a back and forth battle, but with 3.4 seconds left, Casper’s Cameron Howard landed a hook shot to steal the victory.

Golden Eagles lose by two to Gillette College

The Golden Eagles’ last-second shot didn't fall, as they lost to the Gillette College Pronghorns 83-81 on Friday in Cheyenne.

The Golden Eagles came out strong and controlled most the tempo. LCCC took the early lead in the contest and held onto a 47-40 lead at the half.

The Pronghorns battled back in the second half and both teams took turns with the lead. With 10 seconds left, Gillette had an 81-78 lead. LCCC’s Travis Shepherd sank a 3-pointer with five seconds left to tie the game, but LCCC was called for a technical when they called a time out but had no more left. The Pronghorns made one of the two technical shots and the Golden Eagles had to quickly foul Gillette’s Ryan Aaron, who made one of two foul shots to put the Pronghorns up 83-81. On the following possession, LCCC’s Bryce Velasquez had a good look at the basket, but his shot hit the back of the rim and bounced out.
