Men's basketball team on a roll

Hot shooting helps team win two at home.

With the Region IX tournament coming soon, the LCCC men's basketball team decided it was time to make its move. On Feb. 5, the Golden Eagles soared to a 72-60 victory over the Rattlers of Otero Jr. College.

On Feb. 6, LCCC exploded for 58 first half points en route to a 108-72 victory over Sheridan College. Terrance Dent led the way for the Eagles with 17 first half points, including five for five from the 3-point line. Mike Johnson added 14 points, including two for two from the 3-point line. For the half LCCC shot 56 percent from the floor, eight for 11 (73 percent) from the 3-point line, and 14 for 14 from the free-throw line while only committing five turnovers. The Eagles led 58-34 at intermission.

In the second half Kaipo Sabas led the way with 15 second half points on the way to a game- and career-high 26 points. All five LCCC starters reached double figures in the scoring column. Johnson finished with 18. Terrance Dent finished with 17. Romaric Lasme added 14 points and three steals. Davin Anderson finished with 11 points and seven assists. Stan Jones came off the bench and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Eagles. For the game, LCCC shot 52 percent from the floor, 50 percent from the 3-point line, and 91 percent from the free-throw line. The Eagles took care of the ball and had a season low of nine turnovers in the game. Sheridan was led by forward Jerrell Crayton who finished with 12 points.

The Golden Eagles return to action tonight when they host the Plainsmen of Northeastern Jr. College (12-11, 2-1 south sub region) at 7 p.m. in the LCCC Gymnasium.
