Women’s soccer beats two top 10 teams on the road

18th ranked Golden Eagles defeat No. 4 and No. 7 teams.
The 18th ranked Golden Eagles women’s soccer team beat the seventh ranked Iowa Lakes Community College Lakers 2-1 on Sept. 8 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard early as Zahimara Fantauzzi crossed a ball from the left side of the field to Victoria Arenas who put the ball into the net in the seventh minute of the game. In the second half the Lakers scored an equalizer in the 49th minute, but minutes later, LCCC’s Taylor Hockley crossed the ball to an open Sayit Mejia, who scored the game-winning goal.

The Golden Eagles then came away with a 3-1 victory over the tournament host and fourth ranked Iowa Western Community College Reivers on Sept. 9 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

No goals were scored in the first half as both teams were trying to get a feel for each other. In the second half it didn’t take long for the Golden Eagles to take the lead. In the 47th minute Taylor Hockley passed the ball to Sayit Mejia for the first goal. Hockley again got the assist for the second goal on a pass to Zahimara Fantauzzi. In the 77th minute Hockley got to do the scoring off an assist from Mejia. The Reivers only goal came just before the final whistle.

The women’s soccer team (2-1 overall, 0-0 Region IX) will travel to Rock Springs, Wyo., to play Western Wyoming Community College at 2 p.m. on Sept. 14, and then to Powell, Wyo., to play Northwest College at 1 p.m. on Sept. 15.
