The Golden Eagles men’s soccer team beat Western Nebraska Community College Cougars 1-0 on Oct. 24 for the Region IX championship. In cold, windy Cheyenne weather, both teams struggled to score and keep possession. The first half ended 0-0. The second half started much the same.
The Golden Eagles added more pressure to the Cougar defense with 18 shots on goal compared with the Cougars’ four shots but still couldn’t put the ball into the back of the net. In the 83rd minute, LCCC's Guilherme Andrade dribbled past three Cougars defenders and passed the ball to Chris Kistenoglu, who put the ball past the WNCC goalie for the winning goal. Goalkeeper Brandon Carrick and the Golden Eagle defense get the credit for their 10th shutout of the season.
The team (10-7 overall, 5-0 in Region IX) will travel to Missouri on Nov. 4-8 for the district tournament.
