Men's basketball team gets back-to-back victories

Golden Eagles squeak by in one game, win easily in the other.
 
The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team won back-to-back games on the road in Torrington, Wyo., this weekend. The team defeated the Eastern Wyoming College alumni 96-57 on Dec. 3 and McCook Community College 72-71 on Dec. 4.

The Golden Eagles’ Domonique Smith nailed a 3-point basket with 5.4 seconds remaining to get the win over McCook Community College, 72-71 on Saturday.

Laramie County trailed by one point at the half, 35-34, but the Golden Eagles came out hot in the second half and quickly built a seven-point advantage at 46-39. However, the Indians responded with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the score at 46. Neither team could seize control until late in the game when McCook led 70-64 with less than a minute to play. Terrance Dent connected on his fifth 3-point basket of the game to cut the lead down to three. On the ensuing possession Dent stole the ball and passed ahead to Smith for an uncontested layup that cut the lead to one with 28 seconds remaining. The Eagles were forced to foul to stop the clock and sent the Indians to the free-throw line with 23 seconds to go. McCook connected on one of two free-throw attempts, setting up Smith’s late-game heroics.

The Golden Eagles shot nearly 55 percent from the field in the 96-57 rout over the Eastern Wyoming College Alumni on Friday. LCCC had 15 steals over the course of the game and out-rebounded the EWC Alumni 44-29. LCCC led 37-25 at the end of the first half and then poured it on in the second half, outscoring the EWC Alumni 59-31.
