Golden Eagles drop games in season openers.

The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team opened up the regular season at the Norbest Tipoff Classic in Ephraim, Utah, hosted by Snow College on Friday and Saturday. The Golden Eagles played Snow in the first game of the classic.

The Golden Eagles’ Rodrigo Silva (6-10, C, FR) recorded a double-double in his collegiate debut, but the Snow College Badgers took the 80-73 victory. Travis Shepherd (6-5, SF, SO) led LCCC with 22 points including three of six from the 3-point line in a game that had multiple lead changes. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early five-point lead but failed to capitalize from the free-throw line, hitting only three of nine attempts in the first half. The Badgers took a 36-32 lead at intermission.

Laramie County started quickly in the second half, scoring the first five points of the period and regained the lead, 37-32. From there, the lead again went back and forth. With just under 10 minutes to play, the score was tied at 54. The Eagles forced a turnover but were unable to convert. Snow scored on the ensuing possession and maintained the lead for the duration of the game.

On Saturday, the Golden Eagles lost 85-82 to the Salt Lake Community College Bruins.

Silva (6-10, C, FR) posted his second double-double, scoring 26 points and grabbing 16 boards, but the Golden Eagles fell short. LCCC fell behind early 20-15 but rallied with an 11-0 run to take the lead at 26-20 with eight minutes to play in the first half. SLCC had a spurt of its own and ended the half on a 21-12 run, and a 41-38 lead at halftime.

The second half was very closely contested, neither team led by more than five points. The Eagles trailed by one with less than two minutes to play but turned the ball over and committed an untimely foul that sent the Bruins to the free-throw line. Salt Lake converted the first free-throw and beat LCCC’s big men to the offensive rebound after the miss on the second attempt. LCCC committed another foul on the put-back attempt, and the Bruins converted both free-throws to take a four point lead with 1:31 to play. The Golden Eagles were unable to score on the ensuing possession and was forced to foul. The Bruins converted two of four free-throws in the final minute to secure the victory.

The Eagles played without Travis Shepherd (6-5, SF, SO) who led them with 22 points the previous night. Shepherd sustained an injury late in the game versus Snow College and was unable to play.
