The Golden Eagles
had déjà vu against Northwest College in the Region IX semi-finals. LCCC lost to the Trappers 2-1 on Oct. 21. The same opponent and same result as last year’s region semifinals.
The 15th-ranked Golden Eagles took control of the game from the whistle, but the tides soon turned as the Trappers took a corner kick and Legofi Crawford barreled through two LCCC defenders and headed the ball into the goal in the fifth minute. The Golden Eagles stayed focused and got back to attacking the Trappers' goal.
In the 25th minute of play, LCCC’s second leading scorer Alfonso Perea was called for a foul and received a second yellow card, which means an automatic red card. So the Golden Eagles played a man down for the remainder of the game. In the second half, the Golden Eagles made a formation change that gave them more offense, but not much defense.
In the 86th minute, Gleydson Neri crossed in a corner kick to Peterson Neri, who headed the ball into the Trappers' goal to tie the game. As time was about to run out, the Trappers gave one last offensive surge. Northwest’s Leonardo Medeiros dribbled the ball toward the LCCC goal and was met by two Golden Eagle defenders, which forced him to dribble wide and away from the goal. He put up a long shot to the far corner of the LCCC goal and made the game-winning goal with 10 seconds left.
In many ways this was the most impressive season ever in the history of Golden Eagles men’s soccer program. For the first time in program history the team was nationally ranked; they set a school record for most wins in a men’s soccer season with a 14-3-1 overall record; the team went undefeated at home and allowed only 18 goals all season.
