Men's basketball team opens season 1-1

Golden Eagles host Greater Cheyenne Realtor's Classic.

The Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team got its 2013-14 season off to a great start by defeating Northwest College 95-73 on Nov. 8 at historic Storey Gym. The Golden Eagles also kicked off the first of what they hope to be an annual event, the Golden Eagles Greater Cheyenne Realtor’s Classic. This event served as a fundraiser for the LCCC Food Pantry, which provides food for students in need. The sponsors for this event were Century 21, Coldwell Banker, Peak Properties, ReMax and #1 Properties.

It took a little time for the Golden Eagles to get going in the first half. Once they were able to find some rhythm, they took a 41-33 lead into half. The Golden Eagles were in full control of the second half as they put up 54 points in the half for a 95-73 victory.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was returning sophomore All-American Deshon Portley with 25 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Deon Edwin had a strong performance in his first night as a Golden Eagle with 25 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.

As a whole, the Golden Eagles were able to shoot 46 percent from the field, while Northwest shot 45 percent. The Golden Eagles were impressive from the free throw line as well, with 30 of 37 for 81 percent on the night. With the win, the Golden Eagles started the year 1-0.

Golden Eagles suffer first loss of the year
The Golden Eagles were back in action Saturday, Nov. 9, as they hosted No. 21 Sheridan College in the final game of the Golden Eagles Greater Cheyenne Realtor’s Classic. The Golden Eagles were looking to hand Sheridan its first loss of the year, but fell short, losing 84-76.

It was a matchup between two teams picked to finish in the top three of the region. It was a game many people were waiting, for and the teams did not disappoint. The first half was a struggle with both teams trading the lead back and forth. The Golden Eagles managed to take a 34-32 lead into the half.

The second was tight all the way up until about six minutes left, and then Sheridan went on a 6-0 run to get a little separation. In the end, the Generals held on for a 84-76 victory. As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 38 percent from the field, 24 percent from the three-point line and 69 percent from the free throw line.

The loss dropped the Golden Eagles to 1-1 on the year. They head next to Torrington, Wyo., for the Eastern Wyoming Classic on Nov. 15-16 for games against the Fort Collins All-Stars and Eastern Wyoming All-Stars.
