Golden Eagles fall to Western Wyoming

Despite three players scoring in double figures, the Laramie County Community College men’s basketball team fell 79-77 to the Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs Tuesday night in Rock Springs.

The Mustangs started strong out of the chutes, jumping out to a 10-point lead early in the first half. A couple of three-point baskets from Mike Pelo gave the Mustangs a seven-point lead at the half (44-37).

In the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to cut down on the turnovers and did a better job from the free throw line to narrow the gap. The game went back and forth with seven lead changes, but in the end, the Mustangs found a way to pull out the 79-77 victory.

The Golden Eagles were led by sophomore Deon Edwin, who had 22 points and seven rebounds. Fellow sophomore and returning All-American Deshon Portley finished with 20 points. Dimitri Saliba led the Mustangs with 19 points, and Pelo finished with 15 points.

As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 46.4 percent from the field but struggled from the three-point line and free throw line. The Golden Eagles shot 29.4 percent from behind the arc and 64.5 percent from the foul line.

The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 18-12 on the year. They look to have the third seed locked up for the Region IX Tournament. That tournament begins March 1. The final bracket has not been released, but it looks like the Golden Eagles with match up with Northwest College as the sixth seed.
