The LCCC men’s soccer team
took its 0-1-1 record to Illinois over the weekend and took on two nationally ranked teams in No. 7 Illinois Central College and No. 13 Jefferson College.
The first game of the weekend, against Illinois Central College, turned out to be a high-scoring affair. Illinois Central was able to hold on to its lead and secure the 4-3 victory. Farzad Bidgood got Illinois Central on the board first on a free kick that went over the wall from about 33 yards out in the 8th minute. Pedro Ocampo put away the second for Illinois Central in the 28th minute.
The Golden Eagles responded early in the second half as Willy Salamanca (Basalt, Colo.) cut the lead to one as he headed home a cross from Cesar Vargas (Heber City,Utah) in the 49th minute. Illinois Central answered back in the 54th minute when Carson Gray tucked his shot in the near post.
LCCC cut the lead down to one in the 83rd minute when Jesse Molina’s (Jordan, Utah) free kick went in the far post. Playing with a man down the Golden Eagles continued to press and tied the game up in the 88th minute when Dennis Vivar-Diaz (Idaho Fall, Idaho) was able to get a head on Molina’s cross. Illinois Central regained the lead one minute later on a header from Norman Ramos that proved to be the game winner.

Late goal haunts Golden Eagles
The Golden Eagles had to quickly put behind their physical match with Illinois Central as they were playing No. 13 Jefferson College. It was another physical battle between two evenly matched teams. The Golden Eagles got on the board first as Domey Espinoza (Heber City, Utah) put them ahead on a ball from Brandon Flores (Portland, Ore.) in the 17th minute.
The Golden Eagles were holding on tight up until the 88th minute when Carlos Zapata Paz from Jefferson got on the end of a free kick to tie things up. The game went into two 10-minute overtimes, and Luke Heneghan put in a free kick in the 105th minute to secure the win.
With the losses, the Golden drop to 0-3-1 on the year. Next up, the Golden Eagles host Iowa Lakes Community College on Friday, Sept. 6, at 1:30 pm.
