About the Program

The Laramie County Community College Fire Science Technology program is designed to meet the demands of fire service personnel. The program prepares students for a career in the fire service (career or volunteer).

Courses are offered through traditional classroom instruction, independent study, lab, and an academy setting. The program prepares students to take the Wyoming State Firefighter II nationally accredited certification exam. This certification is transferable from state to state within a one-year period from program completion. Experienced firefighters may earn credits transferable to the program from on-the-job training and current certifications.

About the Career

"A Harris Poll discovered the public views careers in firefighting as one of the most respectable careers just behind doctors or scientists. Generally, potential firefighters only need a high school diploma before applying; however, more and more fire departments are now requiring a two-year associate’s degree in fire science or fire prevention." – College Grad website

"Applicants for municipal fire fighting jobs generally must pass a written exam; tests of strength, physical stamina, coordination, and agility; and a medical examination that includes drug screening. The completion of community college courses in fire science may improve an applicant's chances for appointment. In recent years, an increasing proportion of entrants to this occupation have had some postsecondary education."
